Abstract

Elemental S is produced from a solid S cpd. by (a) treating particles contg. a solid S cpd. in a lower fluidised bed to form SOx and (b) passing SOx upwards into an upper fluidised bed at 310-1350 degrees C. contg. char to reduce (some) SOx to elemental S. The char is fluidised by SOx contg. gas from the lower bed. It is pref. formed by contacting a hydrocarbon or hydrocarbonaceous material with a hot substrate or support material, esp. bauxite, brick fragments or pumice, in the upper bed. It is esp. a coke or semi-coke formed in the upper bed from coal. Char is pref. removed from the bed and replaced with fresh char.
