Abstract
Extruded foamed polystyrene article, having reduced flammability and low final bulk density, contains, by wt. w.r.t. initial wt., 20-50% Al hydroxide, (I) esp. Al(OH)3, and 3-10% inorganic lubricant (II), pref. talcum. (I) may be combined with further flame-retarders, esp. organic Cl- and/or Br cpds. and Sb2O3. Extruded foam polystyrene foil is used in packaging, e.g. as boxes for packing eggs and bottles. (I) lowers bulk density, without the addn. of further pore-formers, e.g. NaHCO3 and flammability. Addn. of (II) improves uniform distribution of (I) in foam and reduces abrasion, e.g. in contact with machinery. Pore radius is also reduced.
