Abstract

The machine comprises a unit (16) with drive mechanism travelling over the floor and with steering equipment (54, 56, 58) guiding it along a predetermined path (52) around the item. A taut wrapping mechanism on the unit dispenses a strip of wrapping material (48) which is wound round the item as the unit travels along the path. The steering mechanism can be of the optical type, with a sensor on the unit detecting a track marked on the floor, and having two detectors for the respective track edges. Alternatively a mechanical system can be used, with a follower on the unit acting against an upright rail on the floor.
