Abstract

An installation for drawing an optical fibre from a premoulding, esp. of silicon oxide, comprises a mechanism for lowering the premoulding, a, for pref. induction furnace with a reverberatory chamber and a capstan drum for carrying out the drawing down of the fibre. An optical pyrometer or a thermoelectric couple is fitted for the regulation of the temp. of the furnace. In addn., for the control of the speed at which the premoulding is allowed to descent, two devices are provided. The first of these detects a predetermined fraction of the radiation emitted by the walls of the chamber inside the furnace. The second monitors the deformation of the preform by similarly detecting a further fraction of the radiation emitted inside the furnace.
