Abstract

A packing tool, e.g. for sampling strata during oil drilling operations, has sections which are locked together by a small rotating action, without the use of keys. A cap is secured onto a sleeve down the middle which extends to the nose portion. For the release sequence an intermediate sleeve is separated from a locking ring when a set of shear pins is severed by the upwards pull on the cap. A tapered nut which screws onto the top of the inner sleeve is retained inside the locking ring. An outer sleeve around the top fits onto the cap, and is attached to another nut under the first by screws.
