Abstract

An open fireplace has a hearth arranged on top of a rectangular water container (2). The upper surface has ridges (9) which hold wood logs or coal off the surface to permit flow of air round the fuel. Air is brought in by a pipe (8) through the base and the upper surface has a recess (7) which forms an ash pit. The back of the fireplace is also formed as a rectangular water container (1) and this has a spiral tube (5) connected to it in the parth of the gases to the chimney. The fire heats one room directly and water for central heating radiators in other rooms is circulated through the water spaces where it is heated by the fire.
