Abstract

Crude diphenols (I) are purified by warming a slurry with a mixt. of water and >=1 water-soluble, alcoholic or phenolic cosolvent (II), until (I) has completely dissolved (or nearly so), to the b. pt. (or near the b. pt.) of water or the solvent system. The soln. is then cooled to cause sepn. of purified (I) which is recovered. (II) are pref. mono-, di- or tri-valent alcohols, ether alcohols, amino-alcohols, keto-alcohols or phenols, specifically (m)ethanol, 1,2-propylene glycol or ethylene glycol. (I) is esp. bisphenol A (Ia). (I) are monomers. This method avoids the use of expensive solvents such as benzene or CH2Cl2, or separate solvent recovery stages.
