Abstract

The dirigible airship is filled with helium and hot air in separate compartments. The compartment containing helium is arranged so that it completely or almost completely surrounds the hot air compartment. The two compartments are so arranged that together they provide an aerodynamic shape. The airship skin is made from metal foil which is impermeable to gas and so will reduce leakage. The maximum height reached by the airship can be increased by only partly filling the gas compartment with helium at ground level so that it can expand fully at altitude without creating an excessive pressure.
