Abstract

Elongate material is continuously advanced through a number of successive material reducing stages to be progressively reduced in cross section area. A number of separate reducing stage signals are manually set to represent the elative cross section areas of the material at each reducing stage. Speed reference signals are generated in relation to the ratios of the required cross sectional area of the material at one stage relative to the required cross-sectional area at each of the other stages, and used in conjunction with signals from the stages to generate speed control signals for those stages. Used in metal strip rolling mills or wire drawing appts. Allows more precise control of the reducing appts. to prevent breakage or damage to the material or appts. during start up and normal operation, over a wide range of material sizes.
