Abstract
In the distn. of metals and the sepn. of alloys, a plasma mixt. of natural gas and oxygen or air is formed. The mixt. is ignited to form a plasma beam through which divided metal is projected and the vapourised metal is cooled and set under controlled conditions. The natural gas used is rich in inert gas cpds, esp. CO2. Before the plasma mixt. is formed, hydration water is removed from the otherwise untreated natural gas. The metal vapour formed in the plasma is passed through cooling chambers alongside each other, the walls of which are cooled to a definite temp. corresp. to the pts. of the components of the vapour. The plasma mixt. is ignited by an electrode which is cooled by the circulation around it of natural gas to be mixed with the oxygen or air, and in this manner it is preheated. Metals melting at high temps. and having a high degree of purity are produced, and sepn. of metal is allowed without complicated appts. and with low electrical energy consumption.
