Abstract

The use of epoxy cycloalkene (I) as acid scavengers is claimed. Specifically the cycloalkene ring contains 4-12, (5-6) carbon atoms and the positions of the ring adjacent to those by which the epoxidic oxygen is linked are free. The ring is also pref. free of OH, COOH or halogen or sterically hindering gps. except if these carry epoxy gp. (I) are used in cleaning compsn. based on chlorinated solvents. e.g. trichloroethylene, trichloroethane etc. and in plastics materials which are likely to generate halohydric acids or amines e.g. PVC, chlorinated rubber chlorinated polyolefins etc. (I) are fast acting, sufficiently compatible and have low volatility (cf. epoxidised soya oil and styrene oxide).
