Abstract

Aq. dispersions of polyvinyl butyral of particle size 0.01-5 mu and free of plasticisers are obtd. by the butyralisation of PVA soln. and simultaneous dispersion of the butyral obtd. at =30 degrees C in the presence of H3PO4 as catalyst. The butyralisation agent used is a mixt. of butanal and an alpha-aldehydic acid, pref. glyoxylic acid, in the ratio 99:1 to 80:20, pref. 95:5-87:15. Compsn. is used for coating metals, with drying at 40-50 degrees C. No organic solvent is usd and the coatings obtd. are homogeneous and mechanically strong. The dispersions are storage-stable.
