Abstract
In the continuous casting of vertical or near vertical strands, the strand is removed continuously from the lower end of a continuous casting mould, and during its descent from the mould, the strand is moved between electromagnetic induction devices which exert on the strand a force tending to oppose the descent of the strand. The induction devices are centred with respect to the strand and are located a predetermined distance from the surface of the strand. The conventional dummy bar used to start the cast can be of shorter length than is usual so the mould can be located near to the ground. In addition, the motor-driven extractor rolls can be located nearer to the mould with little fear of piercing the strand crust. The arrangement is particularly useful where the strand is cast with an axial rotation motion.
