Abstract

The contact plate prvides electrical supplies to high power furnace electrodes where good electrical contact must be maintained by evne pressure over the contact plate-electrode interface. The electrode is cylindrical, the contact plate surface matching its curvature. Several such plates are used each being pierced by tubes for the coolant liquid. Contact pressure is maintained by the plates acting as a piston driven by coolant presure within a cylinder in the plate support structure, sealing between piston and support being provided by a deformable membrane. The position of the plate within its cylinder being maintained by a central boss mating with a raised annulus in the cylinder.
