Abstract

A bath is reduced to mfr. molten iron and possibly gas contg. H2 and CO, the prim. materials being fine iron oxides, fine solid, liq. or gas fuel, and O2. Fuel is injected into the bath so the latter contains >2% C, whereas the oxide is pref. pre-reduced by a gas (G1) and blown down the outer annulus of a lance onto the bath, O2 being fed through the lance bore. Gas (G1) travelling with the oxide contains sufficient heat to melt the oxide. Gas (G1) is also blown through the outer annulus of several tuyeres into the froth on the bath, O2 being fed through the tuyere bores, each tuyere using a mol. ratio O2/H2 + CO of 0.5. The gas leaving the bath is used for the pre-redn. of the oxide and then washed and H2O and CO2 removed, the resulting gas is used as gas (G1). In the pref. process, the oxides are reduced to FeO, and possibly mixed with slag of forming elements before being blown onto the middle of the bath which contais 3-4.5% carbon. Part of the gas (G1) produced can be used for the conventional mfr. of NH3 by using N2 obtd. during the mfr. of O2 used in the invention.
