Abstract

Ti is mfd. by electrolytic redn. of a trihalide of Ti, esp. TiCl3, in a molten salt bath. The trihalide may be preelectrolysed in the presence of H2 to give a dihalide. Preelectrolysis is carried out in a cell in which the cathode is at a potential of -0.8 to -1.0 V w.r.t. a reference electrode based on the redox equilibrium Ag++e Into/out of Ag degree. The dihalide is reduced to Ti in the presence of H2 by applying a potential of -1.0 to -1.25 V to the cathode on which the Ti will be deposited. The current density is 10-30 A/dn2. Ti of high purity (99.994%) and low O2 and N2 content is obtd. which can be rolled without intermediate annealing to sheets 5/10 mm in thickness. Because of the low Fe content (is not >0.3 ppm) the Ti has electronic applications. The process may be continuous. The trihalide feeding the electro cell is produced in the same production unit used for mfg. Ti.
