Abstract

Purification of petroleum hydrocarbons comprises treatment with sulphuric acid, with addn. of a low mol. wt. organic polymer soluble in the hydrocarbon. The polymer is pref. dissolved before adding the acid. The process is used for treatment of oil fractions to removed resins, asphalt, N cpd. olefins etc., improve colour and smell, raise viscosity index, acid grade, emulsification resistance, etc. Impurities and foreign matter condense into small flakes and then to a sludge, which is readily sepd. by settling. Yield of oil is increased, as well as the quality, e.g. the colour, acid level and emulsification resistance. Subsequent alkali treatment is easier. For a given quality level, amt. of acid used and amt. of alumina in subsequent purificn. can be reduced. The sludge contg. the polymer can be used after neutralisation as a prim. binder for asphalt, alumina, pyrophillite, etc.
