Abstract
Liq. crystals are perpendicularly or homeotropically aligned on surfaces coated with oxides of silica by (a) cleaning the surfaces by conventional means, (b) heating the surfaces with a mixt. of an aliphatic alcohol, CH3(CH2)nCH2OH, where n is >=2, and an amine at >=60 degrees C, (c) washing the surfaces with an inert organic solvent and (d) placing the surfaces in contact with liq. crystals. Perpendicular alignment of nematic liquid crystals can be achieved without increasing the conductivity of the liquid crystal, without the use of a dopant and without coating the surface with a thick polymer coating. Nematic liquid crystals are used in electro-optic devices.
