Abstract

The constant mesh gears (2, 3) of an automobile gear box are mounted on needle roller bearings in the shaft (1). Either gear (2, 3) can be rotationally connected to the shaft (1) by sliding the internally toothed sleeve (5) which engages teeth on the inner ring (4) and the dogs (8 or 9) of the required gear wheel (2 or 3). To facilitate engagement at low speeds the synchronising rings (6) and (7) are provided with teeth that engage sliding weights (14). These sliding weights slide in slots in the sleeve (5) and at low speeds fall towards the centre and engage slots in the rings (6, 7). At high speeds when synchronisation is not required the weights move outwards and release the ring (6, 7).
