Abstract

Crust formation during the phosphating treatment of metals employing an aqueous phosphating solution which contains metal ions and has a pH between 3.0 and 6.0 is reduced by the addition of a poly- alpha -oxyacrylic acid. The poly- alpha -oxyacrylic acid has the following formula where the symbols have the meaning specified in Claim 1. The said compound is added for as long as it is still soluble in the water.
