Abstract
Lead is added to molten steel for mfg. free-cutting steels, or constructional steels, where the Pb is fed below the surface of a bath of steel in a ladle; and an inert gas is blown into the molten steel to ensure mixing and the uniform distribution of the lead. The pref. plant consists of a ladle fitted with an inlet in its base for the injection of argon to stir the bath; and the top of the ladle is convered by a lid with an axial hole for feeding a steel tube contg. Pb into the bath. The lid also has a fume extn. pipe removing vapours above the surface of the bath, i.e. fumes contg. lead oxides. Uniform distribution of an exact dose of Pb in the steel is achieved. In the case of the constructional steels, which may contain alloying elements, only Pb is added, and no S is used, as the uniform distribution of the Pb provides the properties required.
