Abstract
Hard metals of 20-95 wt.% WC, 2-30 wt.% Co; 0-50, pref. 0.3-40, wt.% additional carbide, as TiC, TaC, NbC, HfC, VC, and MoC, suc that the CO-contg. hard metal phases contain 5-80, pref. 20-50, wt.% Re. Process for mfr. requires sintering 1400-1500 degrees C. to 95-99% theoretical density and then sintering to >99.8% at 1550-1650 degrees C. under Ar or N in an isostatic heating press. Partial replacement of Co by Re gives increase in hardness and strength without formation of a brittle complex carbide phase.
