Abstract
Liq. compsn. comprises (a) a material with variable transparency whose optical transmission properties vary as a fuction of the temp. and/or light intensity and (b) a liq., material capable of forming an irreversible gel, esp. at room temp. Pref. the gel forming material is an acrylic polymer based on acrylamide (I) and/or methylolacrylamide (II). A typical gel forming compsn. contains 5-10% (I), 5-10% (II), 0.3-2% ammonium persulphate (III) as catalyst, 0.3-1 % diethylaminopropionitrile (IV) and water to 100%. Such compsns. are liq. and set to an irreversible gel in about 10 mins. at ambient temp. The compsn. is esp. useful as an interlayer between glass sheets to give a glazing material which becomes more opaque as the temp. or light intensity increases. The presence of the gel material overcomes problems associated with prior art materials of the type when used as an interlayer between glass sheets e.g. in large vertical configurations, due to delamination of the joint between the layers due to the hydrostatic pressure of the liq. interlayer.
