Abstract

ClO2 is produced by redn. of an alkaline chlorate in acid medium by a gaseous or liq. reducing agent, e.g. SO2 or methanol, in a principal reactor, with recycling of residual gaseous effluent to the principal reactor to dil. the ClO2. The residual effluent gases to be recycled are treated with excess reducing agent and sufficient H2O to reduce almost totally the Cl2 contained in the gases to HCl. At least part of the mixt. obtd. is then recycled to the principal reactor. This process allows the stable functioning of installation sproducing ClO2 with recycling of residual effluent gases.
