Abstract
Prepn. of phosphoric acid from mineral phosphates comprises (a) mixing the crused ore with excess phosphoric acid and water and heating the slurry formed to convert the ore into monoacalcium phosphate; (b) adding oxalic acid to the hot slurry and sepg. the pptd. calcium oxalate from the slurry and (e) recovering the phosphoric acid from the liquid from (b). High quality CaSO4 and phosphoric acid are made without use of strong acids, high temp. and expensive plant made from refractories or stainless steel. No preliminary enrichment of ore slurries is necessary; high yields are given. Method also allows U recovery from the mineral phosphates. Typically a slurry of 5.7 tonnes of Florida ore was mixed with 4.725 tonnes of 54% phosphoric acid for 2h at 88 degrees C, and treated with 3 tonnes of oxalic acid to give a 96-98% recovery of phosphoric acid and 3.68 tonnes of pure CaSO4.
