Abstract

The trajectory of the projectile is stabilised by imparting a spinning motion to it, by means of one or more guide rings (3, 4) of diameter equal to the diameter of the gun barrel. Rifling grooves (5) or holes are formed in the rings. Two rings can be used to form a propulsion cage, and the rifling grooves or holes in the two rings can run at different angles, their size and number being such as to permit limited loss of pressure to suit the muzzle velocity. The profiles of the rifling grooves or holes can be aerodynamic, like turbine blades.
