Abstract

A down-the-hole pump particularly to force water up from fairly large depths and which may be manually operated, has a chamber (1) at the bottom with clapper pistons (2, 3) for water entry and discharge, an actuator piston (8) at the top of a down pipe (6) and a parallel discharge pipe (4). air is forced down the first pipe and fills a flexible container (5) inside the chamber (1) which operates the outlet clapper (3) forcing water upwards. Some water is drawn through a tube (10) between the two pipes, past a ball valve (22) until eventually the flexible container (5) is filled with liquid which assists the pumping action. An alternative design has a spring loaded container instead of the liquid filled container (5).
