Abstract

A multi-stage method of fractionating and concentrating sulphite liquor, which has previously been purified to remove free SO2 and residual fibres and has been cooled, operates by a combination of ultra-filtration and reverse osmosis. The sulphite liquor is conducted in forced circulation, at specific pressure and temp. over membranes which retain the higher mol. wt. constit. on the primary side; the retained fraction, after it has reached an optimum concn. is washed with a continuous supply of water to remove residual low-mol. wt. constits. The ultra-filtrate is used as starting matl. for a new fractionating stage at lower mol. wt. following the same principle as the first stage; this process is continued with membranes of successively finer porosity, the retained fractions being washed with water in each case. The operating pressure on the primary side is 15 atmospheres. The wash liquors produced in the washing stages are passed to the next fractionating stage as part of the starting matl.
