Abstract

The capacity of a simple flexible driving belt is limited by fatigue (repeated bending) and temperature rise (hysteresis and slipping). The composite belt described is suited to smaller diameter pulleys, reducing centrifugal force, heating and allowing greater transmission capacity. Construction is a series of discontinuous driving segments joined to either side of the flexible web, i.e. above and below the neutral axis. The web is made up of wires or metal foil and the segments of rubber or U-shaped metal pressings. The segments are shaped such that those outside the neutral axis are in contact on straight runs, and those within the neutral axis on curved section of the runs.
