Abstract

Finely powdered, solidified carbon dioxide or dry ice is made by the continuous, controlled expansion of liquefied CO2 through a divergent nozzle, the pressure during expansion dropping to below that of the triple point of CO2. Pref. the nozzle has a radial inlet which is supplied with liquefied CO2 at Ca -40 degrees C and CA. 10 kg/cm2; the expansion takes place in the nozzle divergent, conical outlet which is fed via an annular passage of adjustable width controlled by axial setting of a needle type valve at the end of an axial rod. It is a very simple, cheap way of producing instant dry ice for freezing food prods. etc.
