Abstract

Pyrolytic treatment of asphalt shales, by (A) use of non-molten ash from combustion of carbonaceous material in a fluidised bed, at >700 degrees C (pref. >750 degrees C) as heat source (B) passing the hot ash into the upper section of a pyrolysis chamber contg. a fluidised bed, (c) passing the asphalt shale into the upper part of the pyrolysis chamber, through which it sinks by gravity, and (D) drawing off the solid residues from the shale and the cooled ash from the bottom. Ash from (A) is at a very high and uniform temp. and causes cracking of the asphalt without risk of agglomeration and blockage of pipes. The cracked prods. are smoke-free, content of olefins aromatics, etc. is similar to that from steam-cracking of heavy oils and can be processed in conventional refineries. Amount of ash required is only 1-2 parts per part of shale. The process can be combined with a heat recovery plant, e.g. for steam generator, in which the ash is produced.
