Abstract

A heat-hardenable phenol-HCHO resin contains a major amt. of benzyl ether bonds and has an i.r. absorption spectrums showing (a) major peaks at 1010 cm-1, 1050 cm-1 and 1230 cm-1, and (b) a ratio (A) of absorption at 1010 cm-1, measured from a base line drawn between the numbers of 1030 cm-1 and 950 cm-1 waves, to absorption at 1230 cm-1, measured from a base line drawn between the numbers of 1130 cm-1 and 1310 cm-1 waves, of 0.1 (0.07). The resin is prepd. by forming a heat-hardenable phenol-HCHO resin with a major amt. of benzyl ether bonds and an i.r. absorption spectrum with strong peaks at 1230 cm-1, 1050 cm-1 and 1010 cm-1 and reacting this resin with is not 1 strong acid to produce is not 35% (60-95%) redn. in the ratio A. The resin is used for bonding wood sheets or shavings, rice husks and foundry sand. Heat-hardening is rapid and the bonding power of the resin can be controlled.
