Abstract
Process for mfg. a thin flat slab, the novelty being:- (a) the use of a cooled metal mould of short length, divided into two parts, the upper part receiving drops of molten metal and the lower part having a cavity to match the slab, the two parts being connected by a junction; (b) a base-plate is put on the bottom of the mould; (c) molten slag is put on the base and extends up into the upper part of the mould; (d) the slag is heated so it is molten and can be refined; (e) molten metal drops are fed from a source into the slag; (f) the metal drops are collected in the lower part of the mould and solidify by cooling and (g) the base-plate (b) is lowered at a speed so that the molten slag remains in the junction between the two parts of the mould. This process of slab mfr. involves less time and lower cost of existing methods of prodn.
