Abstract

The precast block used in tunnel construction has a triangular-section groove (2) running the length of one face. On the opposite face is a rib of similar-section. The rib on one block fits exactly into the groove on the adjacent block and when sufficient blocks are fitted together in this way, a self-supporting arch structure is formed which needs no reinforcing or additional fastening. The blocks should preferably be made of prestressed concrete and the dimensions will vary according to the size of the tunnel. The section of the rib and groove can be any desired shape. Although the use of these blocks avoids the need for shuttering while the tunnel is under construction, a roof-support should be used.
