Abstract

The starting mechanism has a sleeve which receive the starting drive from a pulley and a spur gear sleeve to transmit this drive to the engine, the end of the second sleeve lying coaxially inside the end of the first. Between these two operates the free wheel mechanism. Internal recesses in the first sleeve receive rollers and are shaped so that the inter-sleeve gap is constant for a short distance then decreases rapidly. The rollers are urged by springs towards the latter positions. During starting the rollers are wedged against the slopes and transmit drive. During running the driven shaft retracts the rollers for free running. The driven shaft has helical grooves (58) to clear grease from under the rollers and prevent roller skid.
