Abstract
The service life of the nozzle and of the cathode of a plasma cutting torch with transductor control can be increased by loading the transductor after completion of the cutting operation for a time of over two periods of the operational frequency with a much smaller (5%) current than the max. permissible load current. A time relay is used to introduce load resistors into the transductor output circuit. This eliminates the high starting current peaks caused by the remanence of the transductor cores. The plasma torch can pierce holes in quick succession without damage to cathode or nozzle. The system combines the advantage of little instrumentation with that of a high power density of the plasma arc.
