Abstract

Each settlement is furnished with two permanently located fermenting silos which are visited periodically by a mobile processing unit serving several settlements on a rota basis and equipped with sorting and grinding plant, the processing unit dealing with the contents of one silo at each visit. Pref. each silo is set on a concrete or paved foundation and has open grid side walls and an open top, its volumetric capacity being is not 5 times the daily output of rubbish from the settlement. The processing unit can be mounted on the flat deck of a lorry or tractor-trailer and pref. comprises a powered bucket grap to lift material from a silo into a hopper feeding a conveyor which passes through a magnetic separator to deliver into a grinding mill with outfeed conveyor. Process is economically applicable to small settlements of =30,000 inhabitants, i.e. with a daily rubbish output 25 tonnes. For scattered rural settlements the new facility combines the elimination of pollution with prodn. of org. fertiliser for local agriculture.
