Abstract

Treatment of rocks contg. exploitable organic matter, partic. bituminous shales opt. mixed with non-asphaltic limestones, in vertical gas-generating furnace, by subjecting the rocks in known manner first to a pyrolysis and subsequently to gasification, in such a way that (i) the various gases required are injected at different levels in the gasification zone, the metering and mixing of these gases being controlled automatically in equipment external to the furnace as a function of the temp. built-1p at each level and of the quantity of oxygen is the outlet gas and (ii) the mineral residue is cooled in the bottom part of the furnace after extraction from the reaction zone but before leaving the furnace by means of a gas circulated in closed circuit with heat recovery. The ratio of the volume of the gasification zone to that of the pyrolysis zone is pref. 2:1. Permits the complete removl and recovery of the carbonenous matter other than that required for supplying heat to the process as well as the production of a mineral product, which in appropriate cases, can be used in cements etc.
