Abstract

Reaching of cooper minerals from copper bearing ores, copper plant tailings, copper concentrator prods. copper-bearing sea deposit nodules and materials contg. sulphuric acid sol. copper values, and wherein, from the material being treated, sulphuric acid sol. iron is placed in sol. involves subjecting a prepd. pulp of such material to sulphuric acid treatment at a min. 50 degrees C during at least part of the leaching process; during at least part of the leaching process reducing the pH of the pulp to below about 1.5 by the addn. of sulphuric acid; and during at least the last portion of the leaching process, having present in the pulp a sufficient quantity of at least one agent selected from the gp. consisting of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate, to cause effective dissolution of the copper values with minimum inter. of the sulphuric acid sol. iron in the leach soln. This provides a leach sol. enriched in copper values, and a waste solids material impoverished in copper values.
