Abstract
A preform for an optical wave guide, made by drawing and having a core and a sheath with a refractive index less than that of the core, is made by starting from a tube (or rod) to form the sheath (or core) of a first compsn., depositing a second compsn. as a helix of joined turns on the inside (outside) by displacement of the tube (or rod) in alternate translation and rotation combined at adjustable speeds in front of the point of a plasma arc flame (HF arc flame), with the projection chamber filled with the ultrafine powder of second compsn.; and introducing the coated preform into an oven which is evacuated prior to closing the oven. Used for guiding IR waves of 0.8-1.06 mu. Process avoids the need for vitrification and prevents entrainment of an absorption band at 0.945 mu due to vibrations of the third harmonia of OH ions.
