Abstract

Cephalexin (7-(alpha-aminophenylacetylamino)-desoxy-3-cephalosporanic acid) is prepd. by treatment of 7-amino-desoxycephalosporanic acid either in the free state or as a salt, with alpha-aminophenylacetic acid or with a mixed anhydride of alpha-aminophenylacetic acid. PhCH(NHR)COX (where X is OCOR1, R1 is a lower alkyl gp. and R is a gp. protecting the amine). The process gives very good yields and the product is very pure.
