Abstract

Telephonic communications over short distances in factories and aircraft are often difficult due to parasitic interference. These problems are overcome using a light modulating microphone as part of a telephonic system. A microphone comprises a luminous source (1) which emits a luminous beam (2) onto the metallised reflecting surface of a flexible plastic membrane. With the membrane at rest an optic fibre receiver element (5) receives a predetermined part of the solid angle of the reflected light beam (6) which is increased when modulated by the speaker. A photocell detector (7) demodulates the light beam for amplification (8) to drive a loudspeaker (9).
