Abstract
Limestone powder is treated to make is perfectly wettable by hydrocarbons and lipophilic substances in general, by contacting with alkylarylsulphonic acids (I) of which the Ca salt is practically water-insol., or with a salt of (I), in an amt. of least suff. to form a mono-molecular layer over the entire surface of the particles. (I) pref. have a mol. wt. of >=326, esp. 400-600. The powder pref. has a specific surface of 5,000-30,000 cm2/g and is treated with 0.2-2 wt.% of (I), which is in soln. in pet. ether or is mixed with 1-3 times its wt. of a mineral oil with a viscosity of 5-100 cS at 37.8 degrees C. The prod. is suitable for use as a filler for paints, varnishes, rubber, synthetic elastomers and thermoplastic and thermosetting materials.
