Abstract

The furnace hearth is combined with an exterior liquid metal reservoir which may be bracketed to or separate from the refractory hearth walls, and which may or may not have a fixed or mobile roof and an emergency evacuation orifice. The reservoir wall has an acidic, basic or neutral refractory lining. The communicating orifice between the furnace and reservoir is permanently open.
