Abstract

Water polluted with oils and acids or bases is purified by decanting progressively through a series of sedimentation chambers of which the last one is fitted with a filter bed. The transfer from each chamber to the next is effected by means of a siphon pipe. >=1 siphon pipe draws from near the base of its supply chamber so that oily waste rises for collection in that chamber. The 'pH' may be adjusted by chemical dosing in one of the chambers. This simple robust construction with absence of moving parts eliminates maintenance problems and reduces costs.
