Abstract
Carbothermic reduction of reactive metal oxides comprises reacting the oxide with a stoichiometric amt. of carbon at temps. above 600 degrees K in a molten metal solvent which reduces the activity of the metal formed during the reduction reaction to a level below that required for the metal to form a carbide under the reaction conditions in the system, and maintaining the partial pressure of the carbon monoxide present in the system at a level below the theoretical equilibrium value for the system as the reduction of the metal oxide takes place.
