Abstract

Paper binding is effected in the mass by adding to the paper pulp an aqs. soln. or dispersion of a cationic condensation pdt. with amide groups obtained by reacting one equivalent of active H atoms bonded to the N of the amino groups of a polyaminoamide (I) with 0.5-2.0, pref. 0.8-1.5 mole of an epihalohydrin of formula (II) (where R is H or CH3; and X is Cl or Br) adding to the reaction mixt, before or after the reaction of (I) with (II), a solvent which is at least partly aqueous, and adjusting the pH of the reaction mixt. towards the end of the reaction to 6.0-8.0, pref. 7. (I) is obtained by condensing (a) a polyunsatd. (cyclo)aliphatic, or cycloaliphatic-aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having at least 16 pref. 18-24C atoms; or a(n) (un)satd. (cyclo)aliphatic or cycloaliphatic-aliphatic polycarboxylic acid having at least 16, pref. 18-24C atoms; and (b) a (cyclo)aliphatic, cycloaliphatic-aliphatic or heterocyclic-aliphatic polyamine contg. at least two primary amino groups, pref. a polyalkylene-polyamine, using an excess of amino groups of (b) relative to the carboxyl groups of (a). The condensation pdt. has excellent binding properties and gives paper with a permanent high wet strength, and assists in the retention of fillers. Only small amounts of the pdt. are required and they operate effectively under acid or alkaline conditions. The pdts. have a good resistance to ageing.
