Abstract

Erythema reaction of human epidermis is limited to predetermined level on exposure to excessive erythema-producing light by applying to epidermis a photochemically reactive precursor or sunscreening cpd. absorbing the erythema-causing wavelengths and exposing epidermis to erythema-causing light; photochemically reactive precursor is one which does not itself absorb the erythema causing wavelengths, so that a certain, predetermined amount of erythema is caused before sufficient sunscreening agent is formed (by photochemical decomposition of precursor) to block out the erythema-causing wavelengths and prevent further erythema.
