Abstract

The coal is treated with =0.2 wt.%, pref. >=0.02%, of Na2CO3, or NaHCO3, pref. as an aq. soln. Additional quantities may be used to reduce the SO2 liberated on combustion, pref. 1 1/2 pts. per pt. SO2, The coal is pref. treated with a wetting agent before treatment with carbonate and a binder used to bond the latter to the coal. The amount of additive is dependent on the temp. in the combustion zone over the coal bed and the type and size of combustion unit. The temp. of complete combustion of C to CO2 is reduced by about 400 degrees C. in presence of Na2CO3, leading to almost complete utilisation of the coal. Volatile constituents are burnt in the zone over the coal bed instead of forming soot and smoke.
