Abstract

The centrifuge bowl hs a sludge collecting chamber which leads to a peripheral, annular slot, normally closed but capable of being opened to discharge sludge. Outside the bowl, a radar scanner, operating from a radio - frequency transmitter/receiver, is used to detect the sludge level inside the collecting chamber and to pass a corresponding signal via an amplifying device to a programmed control circuit. The control circuit can be used to operate electro - magnetic, hydraulic or pneumatic actuators to open and close the discharge slot, pref. by bending deformable lips moulded on the bowl parts where they are joined. The discharging operation only takes place when the collecting chamber has accumulated a reasonable amount of sludge - not at regular intervals.
